What happens when infidelity strips a marriage bare?
A provocative, powerful and surprisingly funny drama, from one of the twentieth century’s greatest playwrights Edward Albee – three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, author of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “The Zoo Story”.
Winner of the 2002 Tony Award for Best Play, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
With an all-British cast.
A sold out show from Malmö by southern Sweden’s only professional English-language theatre company.
A visiting guest production.
Produced by and in collaboration with Down the Rabbit Hole.
Can a marriage just… vanish?
Martin, happily-married husband and father, has fallen in love with Sylvia.
To his wife, this is a man who has been her everything for decades. It is who they have been forever.
He is a man with a perfect life, a role model to his son, undone by a fatal flaw.
“You try to tell them; you try to be honest. What do they do? They laugh at you,”
/ Martin, successful architect, animal enthusiast…
This Broadway and West End dramatic comedy is Playmate Theatre Malmö’s fifth play in their third season of quality theatre in English in the region. Performed in English, it is Albee’s most provocative work, shocking theatregoers when it first premiered in 2002, a play that challenges its audience as much as its characters.
“How can you love me when you love so much less?”
/Stevie, the cheated wife.
Husband and wife grapple across the ruins of a marriage.
Dramatic, darkly comical and witty, this is a story about love and loss. What makes a family work, what makes a marriage tick and what makes married couples laugh?
How far is society prepared to tolerate difference? And what after all is normal?
How do you rebuild a family when the unthinkable happens?
Humour and passion in a dramatic comedy, as gripping as it is entertaining.
Jefferson Bond (from Tivoli’s “Crazy Christmas show”, Hamlet Live)
Vanessa Poole, (Venus in Fur; Vanya, Sonya , Masha & Spike)
Kevin Benn (Talking Heads; Quality Street)
David Barrett (Vanya, Sonya, Masha & Spike, Waiters On Stage theatre, Canada)
Quotes from the audience in Malmö:
“Congratulations. Was surprised to see such quality of theatre, an absolute New York standard of performance and acting here in Malmö”;
“It’s an amazing play. It’s a metaphor for homosexuality, or age differences, or anything else society is afraid of. I loved it. Made some people squirm in their seats, but the message was powerful and clear. By taking it to the extreme, Albee shows us how judgmental we are”;
“Brilliant performance” ;
“Great play, great performance”;
“You were awesome last night!”;
“Great production, very powerful performance”
