Down the Rabbit Hole presents Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is the latest play by the American playwright Christopher Durang. The show won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award in 2013 for best play, and was praised by the reviewers as “a humorous adaptation of Chekhovian themes that does not require any previous knowledge of Chekhov”.
A sold-out show, this play had audiences in Copenhagen on their feet with its absurdist scenes of physical comedy, tender monologues and wit.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a hilarious dramatic and heart-warming comedy about the relationships betweeen three middle-aged, single sisters, two of whom live together and are supported by the third, Masha. The play takes place during one of Masha’s visits. The three of them discuss their lives and loves, argue, and Masha threatens to sell the house. Some of the elements in the play are taken from works by Anton Chekhov, including several of the characters’ names, the setting of the play in a cherry orchard, and the theme of loss of a childhood home.
The talented cast also includes:
Joshua Kenndal Shafir as the bare-chested toyboy Spike, Theresa Mangara as the crazy voodoo housekeeper and Seren Oroszvary as the lovely girl next door.
